Physical and Mechanical Characteristic of Expansive Soil of Anlesi Landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir

The Anlesi landslide is located in Wanzhou district in the middle of the Three Gorges Reservoir, where most of the city is threatened by horizontal strata landslides. The landslides are special type, because the sliding surfaces have gentle-dip angle and the strata are horizontal. As is well known, the component force of landslide gravity along the horizontal sliding surface is too small to push the landslide. The failure mechanism of the landslides is not clear until now.Filed investigation, trench excavation and drilling were used to analyze the landslide. In order to investigate the failure mechanism, laboratory tests have also been undertaken, including the clay mineralogy, physical property, shear strength and swell characteristic of expansive soils of the sliding belts. The results show that (1) the content of smectite is found in excess of 60% through X-ray analysis.(2) The shear strength of the expansive soil is strongly influenced by the water content.(3)The close relationship between the observed instabilities and the expansive soils exists.Based on the research as above, the paper could provide some experience for the prevention and control of the horizontal strata landslide in Wanzhou city in the Three Gorges Reservoir.
