Landslide Mitigation: Using Geospatial Technology, Warning System and Their Integration
Due to rapid expansion of population in mountainous and hilly terrain, landslides are becoming an issue of concern in many parts of the world. To impede these landslides, protect lives of people and prevent economic loss, it is required to identify, monitor, predict and warn about the landslide hazards before landslide occurrence. This can be done in a better way with the application of various models (i.e., statistical, deterministic, empirical etc.), soft computing techniques (Artificial Neural Network, Decision Tree) and advanced geospatial technology (GIS, Remote Sensing, GPS, etc.), and applying of early warning systems.Accurate collection of data for landslide mapping from reliable sources plays an important role in mitigation of landslides. Therefore, substantial research in development and use of affordable, easy deployable early warning systems;finding better modeling methods for accurate predictions;and knowledge of application of advanced geospatial technology and its integration with warning system will help in the mitigation of landslides. In this paper, various available landslide models and techniques have been discussed along with their data requirements and benefits.Advantages of warning systems have been summarized.A conceptual flow diagram has been proposed to develop a landslide warning system, mainly using inputs from geospatial technology.
