Rock Falls Risk and Vulnerability at Cerro Gordo, Ecatepecde Morelos, Mexico

In recent decades, the risks of landslides and rock falls have been increasing in the Guadalupe Range.A rockfallrisk is analyzed based on fieldwork, aerial photographs, satellite images, and geological investigation. The first phase is to determine the criteria for risk delineation in an analytic and synthetic geomorphologic procedure.Thematic maps of geology, climatology, hydrology, and land use/cover were produced and integrated in a geographic information system. The second phase is to obtain the hazard, vulnerability, and risk indexes. The hazard index was calculated qualitatively as a function of slope, shape of the blocks, degree of fracturing of the blocks, volume of the blocks, and distribution of vegetation.A vulnerability index was determined bythe number of houses per area and the number of persons per dwelling. The risk index was obtained by analysis of the correlation matrix between the hazard index and the physical vulnerability index.Although a medium risk index was calculated, there is still possibility that the area will become a high risk zone.
