Landslides in the Area around Matsushima Bay Caused by the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake in 2011

This study aims to discuss the geomorphological and geological settings of landslides caused by the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake in the hilly area around Matsushima bay in Tohoku District, Japan.83 locations of landslides were confirmed along the coastline and hill slopes facing the alluvial plain in the Miocene soft sedimentary rocks.94 % of them occurred as rock failures and rock slides.Morphologically most of them have taken place on linear flank slopes, and 5% occurred on concave flanks.Based on the GIS analysis of meshes of both landslide occurrence and non-occurrence within 50m in size, 90% of the landslide mesh has the maximum gradient of 4o degrees and the relief of at least 10m.They tend to occur in Miocene stratified sedimentary rocks with rich joints.
