Establishing the Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Integrated Solutions towards Regional Issues among Students in the Global Survivability Studies (GSS) Program

Regional issues in this recent time are not mainly focus on the natural disasters and its impact to the societies but farther shifted to sustainable development and human security.Even though floods, earthquakes, tsunami, volcano eruption, landslides and droughts are serious event that affected to human life, another issues such as environmental degradation, agriculture, socio-economic instability, foods and medical treatment are also important to be counted. The Global Survivability Studies (GSS) Program of Kyoto University has challenging the students to expand their viewpoint in order to address problems that affect society, particularly those related to natural disasters, man-made accidents, regional environmental change, social instability and food security. In this paper, several activities of GSS Program that already held are described in detail such as field visit to the coastal village of Aceh Province in Indonesia where this area was devastated by earthquake and tsunami almost ten years ago.In addition, field excursion to Rikuzentakata city in Iwate and Beppu city in Kyushu of Japan are also explained. The field training and education activities are conducted to establish the interdisciplinary perspectives on regional issues among the students. Moreover, direct interaction and discussion with the experts, government, policy makers and local people during conferences, seminars as well as field activities has encouraged the students to not only look at one discipline to get the sense of problems. The various knowledge and expanded point of views that obtained from GSS Program hopefully could meet the needs of comprehensive and integrated solutions to solve the regional issues that negatively affected to the society.
