A SAMPLING METHOD TO DETERMINE THE TERMINAL VELOCITY AND SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF FLUIDIZED NANOPOWDER AGGLOMERATES

The understanding of nanoparticle fluidization is hampered by the lack of in-situ techniques to characterize fluidized agglomerates.Although there are correlations to relate the properties of the fluidized bed, such as bed expansion, to the properties of the agglomerates, such as average size and density, the only method that can provide direct and in-situ information about size distribution and density of fluidized agglomerates is their direct visualization.Visualization techniques have two drawbacks: the agglomerate terminal velocity (needed to estimate the agglomerate density) cannot be determined unless the fluidization is suddenly stopped, and the processing of the recorded images is difficult.Currently, there exists no visualization technique to determine the size distribution and density of fluidized agglomerates in-situ and in a continuous way.In this work we introduce a novel device to overcome these challenges. We have designed a settling tube for sampling and in-situ visualization of fluidized agglomerates without the need of stopping the fluidization. The tube has been designed to facilitate the image analysis, increasing in this way the accuracy of the estimated size distribution and terminal velocity of the sampled agglomerates.
