HYDRODYNAMICS OF PARTICLES IN PACKED FLUIDIZED BED

Packed fluidization is a novel technique, in which particles are allowed to fluidize in the interstices of large stationary particles;called packing pebbles or pebbles and a bed in which particles are fluidized in the interstices of stationary pebbles is called packed fluidized bed.Hydrodynamics of particles in packed fluidized bed is quite different from that in conventional unary fluidized bed.For examples, the fluidization of particles in packed fluidized bed eliminates bubbling and slugging;which normally occurs in a bed of high aspect ratio. Moreover, Geldart class B and D particles can be homogeneously fluidized at a relatively low superficial gas velocity and at low bed pressure drop. These differences in hydrodynamic properties are of interest for many applications.Experiments were carried out to investigate these characteristics as a function of the ratio of particle to pebble size, fraction of voids filled by the particles and bed wall temperature. It was found that the minimum fluidization velocity of particles in packed fluidized bed is lower than that of particles in unary bed and it decreases with increase in bed wall temperature.A correlation is proposed to estimate the minimum fluidization velocity of the particles in the voids as a function of measurable variables.
