FILTERED SUB-GRID MODIFICATIONS FOR GAS-SOLID DRAG AND SOLID STRESSES IN FLUIDIZED BEDS

The constitutive relations for the filtered gas-solid drag and the filtered particle phase stresses presented in our previous study (Schneiderbauer and Pirker, 2014) are verified on the one hand, in the case of a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed using 150μm glass beads and on the other hand, in the case of an industrial scale turbulent fluidized bed using 240μm sand grains. The results show that these sub-grid modifications, i.e.these relations account for the unresolved contributions when using coarse grids, are able to predict the bed expansion and the axial profiles of the time averaged solids inventory as well as the bubble rise velocities correctly. Thus, these constitutive are proven to be applicable to different particle diameters and different fluidization regimes.
