INTEGRATED ENERGY GENERATION AND NUTRIENT RECOVERY FROM SEWAGE SLUDGE AND FARMYARD MANURE
Animal and human excrements concentrated in sewage sludge and farmyard manure account for a significant and undisputable source of renewable energy, a sizeable flow of plant nutrients and a hazard to human health due to the occurrence of pollutants and pathogens. These wastes are usually spread on cropland and stored in lagoons, frequently entailing nutrient runoffs, eutrophication, algae blooms and dead zones in inland and sea waters. The high water content prevents long distance transport and use of nutrients in regions where soils are underserved. In response to the environmental drawbacks of current practices and as a source for renewable energy Outotec has developed a fluidized bed based, highly integrated process to exploit the energy and nutrient potential of high humidity waste materials. The proposed solution is economically feasible and has a low environmental footprint.
