DUAL-MATERIAL PROBE MEASUREMENT OF ELECTROSTATIC CHARGES AND HYDRODYNAMICS IN GAS-SOLID FLUIDIZED BEDS

A custom-made dual-material probe was used to measure electrostatic charge on glass beads in a cylindrical Plexiglas column of inner diameter 0.1 m and height 1.0 m.Current signals measured by the probe in fluidized beds are strongly affected by local hydrodynamics.Raw electrostatic signals from the probe were examined at different superficial gas velocities. The amplitudes of current peaks, as well as peak frequencies, increased with increasing gas velocity. There were differences in peak heights between the two materials.Statistical and Fast Fourier Transformation analyses suggest that the current signals are strongly influenced by the hydrodynamics and charge density inside the bed.Decoupled charge densities determined by the probe are of the same order of magnitudes and showed consistent trends with those measured by the Faraday cup method.
