Proposal Methodology for Feasibility Studies for the Installation of Small Scale Wind Turbines in the Urban Environment (Applying CFD Analysis)

In recently years, the world has been experiencing a technological revolution that is transforming the energy sector around the world and Mexico is not the exception. In this context there are concepts that have become relevant; the first of them is the sustainable microgeneration, which will allow every citizen to take responsibility for their own generation and power consumption. Among these technologies, small wind turbines appear to be promising. The second of them is that many issues remain untreated, for instance: planning procedure, structural, vibration and safety issues in the case of a roof mounted application, wind regime analysis and energy yield estimation of small wind turbines in the urban environment, and the effects on the electricity distribution system. Furthermore the reduction of C02 levels is fundamental to continue the energy transition and reaching goals of 100% renewable energy in the coming years, the economic benefit in kWh which small wind generators could have, and how could help to maximize the reduction of the electrical bill. This paper presents a methodology using CFD to study the feasibility on estimating the wind resource and the possibilities of supplying electricity for lighting and power commercial buildings, with the insertion into the roof building a wind project with SWTs, in the urban environment, based on a market study of commercial small wind turbines. Also in this paper will be discussed the C02 Emissions Evaluation of the Small Wind Generation in the study case project, what advantages of emission reduction brings the installation of this urban wind projects. On the other hand, the economic benefit kW/hr. that small wind generators could have, installed in urban zones, and how could help to reduce the electrical bill, and the economic benefit that consumers will have installing this equipment in their homes, apart from the environmental benefit.
