Investigation on Potential Sites for Offshore Wind Farms in Korea
Korean government announced an offshore wind power road map and the 2.5 GW offshore wind power development plan in 2011.Also,recently the government announced the 6tri basic plan on electricity demand and supply and targeted a cumulative wind farm capacity of 17.155 GW by 2017.Currently,the cumulative wind farm capacity in Korea is only about 0.5 GW and more than 16.5 GW of wind turbines must be installed to meet the government plan. Also by considering limitations in onshore wind farm sites in Korea more than 10 GW of wind turbines must be installed offshore. Therefore, this research targeted to find promising offshore wind farm sites over the Korean sea.A commercial CFD code with the national wind atlas data of Korea, terrain maps and land coverage maps was used to obtain wind resource maps of the whole territorial waters of Korea having a resolution of 500 m x 500m.The criteria on wind resource, water depth, distance from a nearby substation, and the minimum capacity were used to find out the promising offshore wind farm sites. As the result,a total of fifteen sites were selected after excluding regions such as military area of operation, fishery, national parks, etc.
