Reliability-Essential of Sustainable Wind Growth
Reliability is now one of the hottest topics in the China wind industry.One urgent issue some China wind developers are facing now is how to improve the reliability of their existing fleet,esp.the fleet installed during the fast growing period from 2006 t0 2010 in China.The generally accepted reason of this issue is believed to be the disconnection between government policy and implementation reality,as well as the immaturity of China local wind technology.This paper focuses on the approaches to improve wind turbine reliability from a Wind OEM perspective by using GE Wind business as an example.GE is now one of the top OEMs in global wind market in regard to not only its accumulative install base,but also its fleet reliable performance leading the industry.Since entering Wind in 2002,GE spent over $2B in renewable technology with focuses on 2 things,increasing reliability(or availability)and power efficiency.Higher efficiency can help a turbine outperform against others,while a poor reliability can really kill a wind business.With this belief in mind,GE spent extraordinary effort to improved turbine reliability by about 15 points to above 98%in a decade.The approaches GE Wind improve fleet reliability: evolutionary product development strategy and advanced technology,rigorous design and thorough validation,strict quality control in supply chain,and lastly continuous improvement through improved service and field issue resolutions.
