Wind Power Generation for Community-based Organizations in Sub-Saharan African Countries:the Case of Ethiopia
The paper attempts to explain that there are pressing and delayed needs for advancing and prompting distributed wind power generation for community-based developments in Ethiopia and most regions of Sub-Saharan Africa(SSA)in general.Taking Ethiopia as a particular case, even with ongoing and relatively extensive grid-integrated wind power generation projects(soon to arise above 300 MW by 2014 and beyond),small-and medium-scale country-wide and community-based wind power generation programs are yet to be initially introduced and seriously considered.Access to,knowledge and technology disseminations of ancient wind power utilizations(2,000 to 3,000years old)and modern wind power generation technologies(with hardware and software components)are still practically unknown to,and missed widely by community-based rural and semi-rural organizations in the country. This has been so for long despite the availabilities of wind flows and prevailing wind distributions across the country with mean wind speeds of 3 m/s,the common standard taken for harnessing wind power.
