The German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate has set itself the goal to cover 100%of its yearly electricity demand with renewables by 2030.To this end the necessary technical, economic and legislative requirements and recommended course of action for the operation of the distribution network have been investigated for a variety of different scenarios. The Ministry for Energy and Climate Protection tasked the study to a consortium consisting of network considerations, political aspects and legislative recommendations. The focus of this paper will be on identifying the most cost-effective technical solution for 100%renewables in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
