NDT Techniques Developed for Wind Turbine Inspections in Taiwan

Composite blade, tower and turbine are three main structural components of wind turbines.Among, wind turbine blade damage was reported the main reason for shutdown and the impact to the operating cost of wind power had been great.Even worse, huge wind blades, once broken, may drop a few hundred meters around endangering life and property safety. Moreover, wind tower generally consists of several sections of steel drums connected by welding and bolts.Fatigue cracks may be caused on such areas of structures subjected to bending from varying wind load and led to rupture of the whole tower and disaster.Turbine shaft as a critical component for torque transfer may be subject to fatigue crack and ignored due to difficulty of inspection. In this study, phased array ultrasonic method with special manipulator for blade inspection by rope access was developed and proved feasible for field service. In addition, fixture assisted PAUT and ACFM techniques were also proposed for the inspection of wind tower weld, turbine shaft and bearing. All these methods should be favorable to the safety assurance of wind turbine structures and development of inland and offshore wind power industry in Taiwan.
