To Disentangle the Motivation Behind Volunteers

This study attempts to disentangle mysterious motivations behind college volunteers, based on the interpretation of volunteering as consumption and investment.Micro-level data, collected by the online Survey from the volunteers in World Exposition Shanghai China 2010 and the (non-) volunteers in RenDa Economics Forum, which is one of the main Chinese Social Networking Services websites, provide strong support for the consumptionmotive. As far as the investment motive is concerned we do not find clear statistical evidence for its validity with control for some other demographic factors, such as GPA, SNCEE, education of parents, working location and the type of working organization.
