Plant Growth Detection in a Plant Factory
Nowadays, a plant factory has been attracting attentions as one of plant production. In a plant factory, growth detection is essential in order to supply, for examples, vegetables to the market.Existing plant factory systems have capability to control environments for the plant growth. The systems would also simulate a plant growth. However, there is no system, which detects the plant growth automatically. In this study, we propose an automatic plant growth detection system as a PSE (Problem Solving Environment) for a plant factory. This system takes pictures periodically. The pictures taken are processed to extract plant edges. Then we determine whether the plant growth is sufficient by comparing the extracted plant edges and the simulated results, According to the actual measurement, the plant growth is mostly proportional to time.We use the L-system to simulate a plant growth. The L-system is a kind of formal grammar proposed by Aristid Lindenmayer, and the actual measured values are compared with the simulated values with the L-system.
