Correlations of Certain High-Heritability Horticultural Traits in Persian Walnut (Juglans regia L.)
Genetic effects and environmental factors are two important reasons for monitoring possible existence of heritability correlations.Correlations of many traits might be due to the linkages between related genes or multi-gene effects.The aim of this research was to study and determine correlations between some important horticultural traits with high heritability in Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.) in the north of Fars province, Iran.In addition, some important traits in the walnut breeding program were considered.The obtained results showed that kernel weight has a positive and significant correlation with growth habit, leaf and leaflet length as well as leaflet number.But nut and kernel weight had negative correlations with last pollen reception date.Pollen shedding date showed a positive and significant correlation with pollen reception by stigma.There were strong and positive correlations between nut and kernel weight with nut size.Also, nut weight had positive correlation with shell thickness and kernel weight, although shell thickness showed strong negative correlation with kernel percentage.Date of bud break showed strong positive correlation with pollen shedding, stigma pollen reception and nut size; while it had a negative correlation with kernel percentage.According to the obtained results, nut and kernel weight, shell thickness and difficulty of removal of kernel halves are the most important traits for determining kernel percentage.Moreover, nut length, thickness and width and also shell thickness play an important role in determining nut and kernel weight.Also, genotypes with lateral bearing habit produced the highest yield.Mainly, these genotypes were classified as early mature genotypes.
