Comparison of Some Promising Turkish and Foreign Walnut Cultivars
The present study of the behavior of 13 walnut cultivars grafted onto seedling rootstocks of Juglans regia L.was carried out under the ecological conditions at Niksar, located at latitude 4003550.85N, longitude of 3605637.63E, and 426 m above sea level. The orchard was established in 2008 on 7×7 m spacing. In this study, all the Turkish walnut cultivars were earlier leafing than the foreign walnut cultivars. The latest leafing cultivars were Fernor, Fernette and Chandler.Cultivars Mara(s)-12, Mara(s)-18, (S)ebin and (S)en 2, exhibited freeze damage of 9 to 33%.The cultivars with the earliest leaf drop were Fernette and Fernor. The cultivars with the latest leaf drop were Chandler, Midland and Pedro.Average nut diameter across the sutures varied from 35.24 mm (Fernor) to 38.47 mm (Fernette), nut height from 33.73 mm (Fernor) to 36.86 mm (Fernette), and nut length from 60.62 mm (Fernor) to 46.82 mm (Midland).Nut weights averaged from 12.79 g (Fernor) to 15.35 g (Midland), kernel weight from 5.80 g (Fernor) to 7.22 g (Fernette).Kernel percentage varied from 42.85% (Pedro) to 47.33% (Fernette) and shell thickness from 1.61 mm (Fernor) to 1.73 mm (Pedro). The average oil content ranged between 59.96% (Midland) and 73.46% (Fernor), protein content between 15.33% (Chandler) and 19.38% (Fernor), and ash content was between 1.67% (Pedro) and 1.91% (Chandler).
