A Rapid Grafting Technique Using Direct Sowing of Fresh Walnut Seeds
In order to produce seedling rootstocks of walnut, late, thick-shell, fresh walnut were harvested, and were seeded directly in mid-September.The development of root system fully formed before the soil was frozen in the winter, the seedlings started to grow early in spring of next year and looked neat and sturdy.The growing season was extended about two months and the seedlings were grafted about one month in advance.The optimum period for grafting was from mid-June to early July.By the technology of single-edged blade patch bud grafting of walnut, the grafting survival rate could rise to 90% and one person could graft about 500 plants per day.The young trees were taken out from the nursery in the same year.The technique could shorten the walnut propagation period to 1 year, and reduce costs and improve the economic benefits of propagation of selected cultivars of walnut.
