Effects of Soil Water Contents on Growth and Nut Character of Walnut in Drought Hilly Region of Taihang Mountain
Three-year-old Lvling walnut trees in drought hilly region of Taihang Mountain were used in this trial in order to study the changes of soil water contents under different irrigation quantity and its effect on yield and nut character of walnut.The results showed that different irrigation quantity had obvious effect on growth, yield and nut characters of Lvling walnut.There was a very significant difference among soil water contents and nut weight, yield, tree height, tree crown breadth, and significant difference between soil water contents and kernel percent.The nut weight of the trees irrigated with 60 kg one time was up to 11.17 g, but the nut weight of the trees irrigated with 40 kg one time was only 9.26 g; the yield per trees that were irrigated with 60 kg one time was 1.44 kg, and it was 1.71 times compared to the trees irrigated with 40 kg one time.This indicated that the yield and quality of walnut could be enhanced by increasing irrigation quantity in drought hilly region.Nut weight was affected by soil water content, nut weight and soil water contents at 55-75 cm soil layer on 14 May and 45-65 cm soil layer on 2 July had very significant positive correlation.Nut weight and soil water contents at 35 and 45 cm soil layer on 14 May, 15-55 cm soil layer on 16 June, 25, 35, 75 cm soil layer on 2 July, 55, 65 cm soil layer on 15 July, 25,75 cm soil layer on 30 July had significant positive correlations.The soil water contents had great effects on nut weight from 14 May to 30 July, and it had little effects on nut weight from 30 July.Yield per tree and soil water contents in 15 cm soil layer on 16 June, 2 July had significant positive correlations.Kernel percent and soil water contents in 15, 25 cm soil layer on 30 July had significant positive correlations.
