Scale Insect Development and Experimental Answer in the South-East Walnut Production Area of France

The south-east walnut production area in France has known an outbreak of brown soft scale, Parthenolecanium corni (PC), considered so far as a second order pest.Damage, including harvest loss and deadwood production, appeared in the orchards.Describing the life cycle of the insect on walnut and under local conditions was a preliminary step of investigation for with a view to efficient, supervised control.P.corni has been described on other plant species and has shown different voltinism and migration habits. After two years of weekly insect sampling and stage determination, a life cycle was proposed.Under local conditions, P.corni produces one generation per year.Winter migration intensity can vary considerably from one plot to another. With this better knowledge of the life cycle of PC, a field study hasbeen conducted to control the insect at an early development stage, in March, by using ATOMAK02.Both ATOMAK02 and the white oil insecticide used as a reference product were efficient on PC.Two different doses of ATOMAK02 were tested. With the dosage giving optimal results, an efficiency rate of 80% was obtained.
