Sectoral comparison of electricity-saving potentials in China:An analysis based on provincial input-output tables
Chinas electricity generation is mainly dependent on fossil fuel.Advocating electricity conservation in different sectors and regions is certainly important for reducing energy-related CO2 emissions and other pollutants. The aim of this paper is to identify the sectors as well as the economic regions with higher electricity-saving potentials. We propose two indicators for measuring the electricity-saving potential based on the input-output method, called technical elasticity coefficient(TEC)and price sensitivity coefficient(PSC)respectively. The proposed approach is used to analyse the electricity-saving potentials of 20 sectors in different provinces of China in 2007.Our empirical results show that Mechanical industry has the largest electricity-saving potential. From the perspective of economic regions, the east region takes the first place. An electricity forward correlation coefficient(EFC)is also presented to examine the relationship between electricity-saving potential of one sector and its power consumption in our study.
