Simultaneous optimisation of structure and infrastructure for distributed energy supply systems
The possibilities to design distributed energy systems are manifold and lead to a wide range of candidate system structures with even more combinations of infrastructural designs.The costs for energy distribution and energy network construction easily amount to about 20%of the systems operational and investment costs for large industrial sites and communal areas.Thus,layout optimisation by optimal routing of distribution networks and optimal placing of technical units can lead to significant cost savings and should be considered during systems design.This paper therefore integrates layout optimisation of the energy network topography into an MILP formulation for energy systems design allowing for simultaneous optimisation of the systems structure,design and operation.The energy network superstructure is generated from a graphical site representation including all possible energy distribution paths,i.e.,pipes,cables,etc.,together with their installed capacities.Investment costs for new or expanded pipes and conduits as well as thermal and hydraulic losses in the pipes are considered.The methodology is applied to the optimisation of an energy supply system with heating and cooling demands.It is shown that the network establishment costs have great impact on the overall optimum.The solution time required to solve both problems simultaneously is generally larger than the time for solving only the structural optimisation problem.However,efficient modelling of the underlining cost function and system topology can reduce the effort to solve this problem to practically acceptable solution times.The method has been integrated into a user-friendly software framework briefly described in this paper.Using the methodology presented in this paper,users can reduce operation and investment costs significantly.
