Performance Comparison of Parabolic Trough Solar System with Two Different Kinds of Reflector

This paper considers the error transfer process to present an optical performance model of solar trough system. The error transfer model from the slope of reflective and refractive surface to the reflective ray is applied for different mirrors. We compare the optical performance of solar parabolic trough system with vacuum tube receiver under two kinds of reflectors, the glass mirror and the film mirror. The performance of the two systems at different time, different latitude and different atmospheric transparency with a north-south axis tracking system and an east-west axis tracking system are compared. The results indicate that the error of the optical surface will be enlarged to the concentrated ray in high incidence angle, thus decreasing the efficiencies and net energy of the solar concentrator greatly, especially in the winter solstice of high latitude such as 40 degrees. If the north-south axis tracking system is applied, both parabolic trough systems with vacuum tube receiver have very low efficiency in the winter solstice day,and the net energy output in the day is less than one sixth of the summers. The performance of solar trough system with glass mirror decreases more than 20%than that of the system with the film mirror in winter solstice if the design and parameter of the two systems are the same. Our results show that the error transfer process should be considered in predicting the performance of the solar trough system.
