A wind tunnel experimental study of icing on wind turbine blade airfoil

Icing on blade surface of wind turbine is a serious problem in cold regions, which greatly effects the performance of wind turbine. To verify the characteristics of surface icing, wind tunnel tests were carried out on the wind turbine blades with NACA7715 airfoil. The chord of blade is 0.22 meter, and the height of blade is 0.2 meter. There is a water spray nozzle set in the outlet of wind tunnel to supply fog with different diameter of water-drops and different flow discharge. The flow discharge can be controlled by a flow controller.Wind tunnel tests were carried out in the winter as the cold air outside can be induced into the wind tunnel. The icing distribution of blade under different wind speeds and attack angles were obtained by camera.Furthermore, the icing rate, icing area and icing thickness at the leading-edge of blade were calculated and analysed. The icing rate is defined as the ratio of the mass of ice accretion against the mass of water sprayed from nozzle. The main test results show that the maximum icing rate of NACA7715 is 6.6%,the ratio of maximum icing thickness is 3.2%and the maximum icing area ratio is 32%at the attack angle of 30 deg.
