Advances in urban wind energy technologies:A short review

Rapid urbanization pace has consequently led to increase in energy demand to satisfy the urban communities need.Efforts towards improving wind energy technologies and their potential applications in order to optimize extraction and improve generation in turbulence urban wind profile have been the main technical focus. As our future energy demand is certain to rely increasingly on multiple renewable sources, this review vividly captures the fact that there is great potential for development of wind energy technologies in the urban environment. Many new ideas and solutions are appearing every day for technical, economical and environmental sustainability in urban areas.Although simplicity in design and construction, and low cost of materials have been the major driving factors in the decision making process, other challenges in design are gradually being solved to take advantage of urban low and turbulent wind speed characteristics, installation space challenges, vibration and noise reduction, among others. This review analyzes some of the unique solutions that have been and are being developed in the applications of wind energy technology in urban environments.
