A Polygeneration System for Methanol and Power Based on Coke Oven Gas and Coal with CO2 Recovery

Polygeneration system for chemical and power co-production has been regarded as one of the promising technologies for fossil fuel sustainable utilization. In this paper,a new polygeneration system is integrated, with both coal gas and coke oven gas inputs for methanol and power production.New system demonstrates the superior performance to the single-product systems without carbon capture, whose primary energy saving ratio is more than 5%,and exergy efficiency is more than 50%.To clarify the characteristic of the new system, exergy balance sheet and Energy Utilization Diagrams(EUDs)are applied to reveal the essence of performance improvement. The results show the following reasons: Firstly, pressure swing absorption is used to remove the hydrogen from coke oven gas, which reduces reforming exergy destruction.Secondly, the thermal energy for partial methane reforming is sensible thermal energy of syngas out of coal gasifier instead of fuel gas combustion.Thirdly, the mixed gas by coke oven gas and coal syngas can make the composition more close to chemical synthesis without any energy consumption.Lastly,CO2 is recovered during chemical energy release and at the highest concentration with less energy penalty. This new system has the capability of both effectively utilizing the coke oven gas and developing coal-based polygeneration system with carbon capture, which leads to a new direction for clean energy technology.
