A detailed optimization model for combined cooling, heat and power system operation planning

  A detailed optimization model is presented for planning the operation of combined cooling,heat and power(CCHP)energy systems.The purpose is,given the design of a cogeneration system,to determine an operating strategy that allows maximizing the gross margin of operation while taking into account time-varying loads,tariffs and ambient conditions.The model is capable of considering the simultaneous use of different prime movers(generating electricity and heat),auxiliary boilers,heat pumps,and absorption chillers to satisfy a given demand of electricity and heat.Heat,recovered from the units at two temperature levels,can be stored in hot tanks.Units can have one operative variable(e.g.,simple cycle gas turbines,referred to as “one-degree of-freedom units)or two operative variables(e.g.,gas turbines with post firing,referred to as “two-degrees-of-freedom units),highly nonlinear performance curves describing their off-design behavior,and limitations or penalizations which affect their start-up/shut-down operations.To exploit the effectiveness of modern Mixed Integer Linear Program(MILP)solvers,the resulting Mixed Integer Non Linear Programming(MINLP)model is converted into a MILP one by linearizing all performance curves and constraints according to state-of-the-art techniques.The model,which is written in the AMPL algebraic modeling language and solved with the IBM ILOG CPLEX Optimizer,has been tested on a real plant case.The results have been analyzed from the point of view of simulation capabilities,robustness,quality of the optimization results and computing time.
