Estimating Properties of Subsurface Layers from GPR Spectral Attributes
Based on the different influence of the geometric and the electric parameters of subsurface layers on the ground penetrating radar(GPR)frequency spectra,we use the different spectral attributes to estimate the different parameters of subsurface layers. For a three-layer model, the frequency of the first extreme point on the amplitude spectrum of GPR response to the model is equal to the inverse of double temporal thickness of the middle layer, and the period of the notches on the amplitude spectrum is equal to the inverse of the thickness. So the temporal thickness of the middle layer can be estimated from the frequency of the first extreme point on the amplitude spectrum,or from the period of the notches. The extreme value frequencies on the phase spectrum depend only on the depth and the thickness of the middle layer. When the thickness has already been obtained, the temporal depth can be estimated using only the extreme value positions of the phase spectrum. When the thickness and the depth of the middle layer are fixed, the permittivities of the three layers and the conductivity of the middle layer can be estimated from only the phase spectrum. In consequence,we propose a step-by-step GPR inversion method for the estimation of thicknesses, depths, permittivities and conductivities of subsurface layers.
