Towards Building Automated Web Information Monitoring Services to Support Research Profiling
Several projects have been carried out in the Chinese Academy of Sciences to support automatically monitoring and profiling the science, technology and innovation activities based on web resources released from some key institutes (such as some national administrative offices, research councils, funding agencies, and leading research institutes).An automated web information monitoring system has been developed and widely be used in the information analysis teams in the Chinese Academy of Sciences.Up to now, several automated information monitoring services have been set up, such as S & T strategy and policy monitoring service, aeronautics and space research monitoring service, environment and resources research monitoring service, information technology research monitoring service and energy research monitoring service.Those automated information monitoring services provide several useful functions, such as monitoring the targeted institutes timely, keeping trace of recent development of targeted research activities for long time, identifying valuable web resources that have important intelligence values, automatically identifying the category which the intelligence should belong to, automatically analyzing the web pages and rich content documents (e.g.PDF files, word files...) to extract key terms and objects (named entities) from the content, performing topic clustering based on extracted terms, automatically identifying key research activities and key research topics within one institute, automatically identifying hot research activities and hot topics in a period.Base on those functions, the information analysis teams can get valuable inputs from information monitoring services which could be used in the process of research profiling for a current research area.The authors also outline the future directions of those the automated information monitoring services to make those services benefit more information analyst team and researcher in the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
