A Study of Competitive Technical Intelligence Sources Oriented Enterprise Strategy and Tactics
Competitive technical intelligence is an analytical process that transforms disaggregated competitor technology data into strategic or tactical technology knowledge, which can enhances enterprise competitive advantage.This paper mainly analyzes seven key sources of competitive technical intelligence that can provide support for strategies and tactics of enterprises.These sources include patents, scientific and technological literature, conferences, internal gatekeepers, external gatekeepers, lead users and strategic suppliers.First, the authors analyze competitive technical intelligence position in competitive intelligence so that the fields on which competitive technical intelligence should focus are identified.Considering the extent of development of technology, competitive intelligence can be divided into three phass: technology search, competitive technical intelligence, and competitive business intelligence.These sources can be effective in the first two phases.Then, the seven key sources of competitive technical intelligence are put in a two-dimensional competitive intelligence sources classification framework so that their similarities and differences are understood.This framework divides each intelligence source into primary or secondary in terms of proximity to the analyst, as well as personal or impersonal in character.It is found that none of these sources are located in impersonal and secondary sources quadrant, because these sources in this quadrant can speed up the technology advance in the industry, and are not related strategies and tactics of enterprise directly.Finally, the authors explain how to use these sources and its relevant problems from strategic and tactical perspective.This can guide related practitioners to use these sources properly.
