Key Technologies and Future Trend for Deepwater Platform

  The development of deepwater platform has reached a new stage in recent years with the substantial increase in water depth and various types of new structure concepts.The previous research-dominated design approach has shifted into designed-oriented engineering approach.But the researches of various new issues still play an important role in deepwater platform due to the lack of industry experience on the complexity of some new systems.The shifting of the industry approaches reflects some of the new development of the industry: (1) maturation of the industry in recent years; (2) the increasing need of quickly developing the discovered oil/gas fields; (3) substantial increased number of deepwater projects; (4) the increased complexity and the demanding of more efficient installation; and (5) worldwide participation of deepwater field exploration and production.Technology has always been the driving force in deepwater projects.With the recent advancements in deepwater exploration, there are some changes in key technologies in deepwater.Some old challenging problems have been solved, and some new technologies have emerged.These cover the areas of design, analysis, construction, and installation.The importance of the floating system in offshore projects can be demonstrated in the following several areas: the substantial dynamic structure responses due to wave loading and current loading; the hmited motion requirements of risers in deepwater ; and the increasing difficulty of installation for different components of the system.With those changes, the industry has now focused more on the integration technologies which produce the break-through for the entire system and results significant advantages or savings of project;than the used-to-be concentrating on single key technology.Some examples are: coupled time domain analysis, integrated equipment module, stress joint for risers, subsea integrated system, integrated platform for offshore installation,just name a few.China is on the verge of quickly moving into deepwater exploration now.With the demanding of developing offshore oil filed in South China Sea, there are many new technologies to be encountered.Some of these are the current industry is facing; and more will be new challenges.To understand and to get prepared for the future development are becoming our major tasks now and in near future.This review will target the current key technologies of deepwater platforms and future developing trend, evaluate the main tasks during the design, construction, installation, and associated major technical requirements, and address the major technical challenges to be encountered during the deepwater platform project.
