DYNAMIC NATURE OF ALL-FIELD INTERDISCIPLINARITY: INVESTIGATION FROM CHINESE ACADEMIC RESEARH OUTPUT
Based on Science Citation Index Expanded and a well-defined classification of science fields and subfields, this paper explores the degree of interdisciplinarity of science and the knowledge flow evolution between (sub)fields in China from 1995 to 2010 via citation analysis and social network analysis. The study reveals that either from the perspective of knowledge integration of each field or from the knowledge flow network between (sub) fields, science in China has indeed become more interdisciplinary and it is especially true for those basic fields. However, the main external sources of each (sub)field are still those that are more closely related with it.Besides, considering the contribution each (sub)field makes to Chinas other (sub) fields, multidisciplinary sciences has become the main external source of many (sub)fields while the two main basic fields, physics and mathematics gradually contributes less to other (sub)fields respectively.
