QUALITY OF CHINAS CATCH UP FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF PRODUCTIVITY LEVEL

Now the size of Chinas economy ranks world s second and there is a strong catch up.However,it doesnt represent high quality of Chinas catch up.This paper focuses on it from the productivity level perspective. We apply bilateral primal TFP level accounting to estimate productivity Level in China towards USA and Japan for 30 industries covering the entire Chinese economy using a time series of input-output tables covering 1981-2005.The results are quite striking. While aggregate productivity level was converging over the period, the industries show separate behaviour.Secondary sector show evidence of convergence more stronger than that found in the aggregate. In contrast, agriculture and services industries dont display the pattern of convergence in TFP level. These indicate that quality of Chinas catch up in secondary is very good, but one in services is not good and one in agriculture is very bad.
