Improved Transmission Performance of Adaptively Modulated OFDM Signals Using Quantum Dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifier Intensity Modulators
Extensive explorations are undertaken, for the first time,of the feasibility of utilizing quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifier intensity modulators(QD-SOA-IMs)in intensity-modulation and direct-detection(IMDD)SMF-based transmission systems using adaptively modulated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(AMOOFDM).A theoretical QD-SOA-IM model is developed,of which the performance is compared with previously reported SOA-IMs,and results show that QD-SOA-IMs can not only considerably improve the AMOOFDM transmission performance but also broaden the optimum operating condition ranges. In particular, for achieving signal bit rates of > 30 Gb/s over > 60km SMFs,QD-SOA-IMs allows a 10 dB reduction in CW optical input powers injected into the modulator.
