Synthesis and thermal characteristics of Yytria-stabilised zirconia-graphene (YSZ-Gr) composite

  A method of synthesizing yttria-stabilized zirconia– graphene(YSZ-Gr)ceramic composite was developed.The colloidal processing method was employed followed by vacuum sintering for 4 hours at 1150℃.High resolution SEM images of the ceramic composite with homogeneous dispersion and embedment of graphene flakes within the YSZ grain matrix were presented.Thermogravimetric analysis indicated the YSZ-Gr ceramic composite exhibited excellent thermal stability performance at 950℃ and experienced a negligible weight loss of 0.5 wt%.Micro-explosion test on the composite with Hydroxylammonium Nitrate(HAN)using electrolytic decomposition method shows that the material was relatively weak in which further improvement required.
