Experimental research on the temperature measurement of super-cooled droplets using laser-induced fluorescence
The existence of super-cooled water droplets in the cloud produces high risks to the aero-engine operation safety.Knowledge about the temperature behavior of such droplets is of significant importance in the anti-icing research field. This work studies the feasibility of a non-intrusive laser-induced fluorescence(LIF)technique in the application of temperature measurement of super-cooled droplets.Rhodamine B dye in ethylene glycol solution mixed with 50%pure water was used as the fluorescent indicator.Experiments on the fluorescent characteristics of Rhodamine B against solution temperature were first carried out to obtain a temperature scaling tool based on the LIF technique. It was found that the relative fluorescent intensity increases with the solution temperature. This finding was then applied inversely to determine the liquid droplets temperature in the experiment investigation using low temperature nitrogen gas. Results of the current work prove that the presented method is feasible in the application of temperature measurement of super-cooled water droplets.
