Numerical Investigation of Start-up Process of Pulsejet

The pulsejet may be an ideal micro propulsion system for its simplicity in structure and reliability in performance, but received little attention since the mid 1950s.In this paper,a numerical simulation is performed to have a better understanding of the start-up process of the pulsejet, whose total length is approximately 8 cm with two rearward-facing inlets configuration. The model is meshed by Gambit and its quality is proved to be acceptable by a grid refinement study.Three parameters, the angle between the fuel jet and x-axis,the Volume Fraction Constant and the time Scale Constant reaction, are specified.Fluent14.0 software is utilized to model a 3-D unsteady compressible viscous flow. The turbulent flow and the reaction rate are modeled with the k-ε model and the Eddy Dissipation Concept Model(EDC),respectively.Pressure,temperature,x-velocity,mole fraction of oxygen and hydrogen are monitored to provide physical insight into the pulsejet cycle. The pulsejet cycle can be described as the following steps: when combustion event begins, the pressure and temperature increase in the combustion chamber. The compression waves are generated and propagated into the inlets and exhaust tube. Then most of the products are expelled through the exhaust duct. The expansion waves are generated at the inlets and exit, and travel back to the combustion chamber. The pressure decreases, and the cold air is sucked into the combustion chamber through the inlets. Finally, the hot products from the exhaust tube ignite the reactant. And then, the next cycle begins. The operating frequency of the model is 1072 Hz.The average net thrust is approximately 0.1035 N and the Specific Fuel Consumption is 0.313 kg/(daN·h).
