Investigations on Trajectory Correction for Typical Artillery Projectiles

This paper investigates the use of drag brake module mounted on a spin stabilized artillery projectile with the purpose of correcting range. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the correction module,an accurate trajectories prediction via atmospheric flight is demonstrated using a full six degree-of-freedom nonlinear model. The model includes Earths rotation and ellipsoidal shape. The computational flight analysis takes into consideration all the aerodynamics variations by means of the variable aerodynamic coefficients,in addition to gravity. The simulation results show that the impact accuracy of a conventional projectile using this drag brake module can be improved. The deploying of drag brake in early stage of trajectory results in large range correction.A simple method for drag brake deployment time estimate is demonstrated.
