Analysis and Optimization of the Polyurethane Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) Process for Manufacturing Instrument Panel

In order to improve the quality of automobile instrument panel, this paper studies the reaction injection molding(RIM)process of semi-rigid polyurethane foam, and provides insights for optimizing the process parameters of instrument panel molding.Specifically,an experiment is firstly carried out to record the temperature changes of polyurethane adiabatic polymerization during the RIM process, then a theoretical model of adiabatic temperature rise is established based on the experimental results. Finally, the polymerization reaction kinetics of polyurethane are discussed combining with experimental data and theoretical analysis. The results show that the theoretical model can accurately describe the temperature changes and NCO conversion rates of polyurethane.Furthermore, the experimental findings and the proposed theoretical model can provide an important guidance for selecting appropriate raw material temperature, mold temperature, filling time and other process parameters.
