A Review of Mechanical Model Control Methods of Electrorheological Fluid Damper Impact Loading

As a new type of smart materials,Electrorheological(ER)fluid can change from liquid to quasi solid in a millisecond under the influence of the electric field, and which can experience a dramatic change in their viscosity and shear stress.ER effect has caused wide public concern in recent years and showed great application prospect in vehicle, civil engineering, mechanical vibration control and other fields. At present,ER fluid is mostly used in low speed occasions such as ER clutch, shock absorbers and ER brakes. The researchers mostly focus on structural parameters for reducing vibration and noise, isolating vibration and so on.However, there are few researches on ER fluid,ER devices and control strategies under impact loadings with short action time and large force. In this paper, the compositions and properties of ER fluid and the working mechanism of ER effect are introduced. The structure and dynamic mechanical model of ER fluid damper are described.Furthermore, the mechanical properties of controllable damper in the condition of impact loadings are summarized, and the problems of the controllable damper are illustrated as well.Above all,the feasibility of controllable damper under impact loadings is deeply analyzed in this paper. This review provides the reference for the applications of ER fluid under impact loadings.
