Numerical Analysis of Weis-Fogh Effect for Half-Rotating Wing Based on Fluent

The Weif-Fogh effect was essentially theoretical explanation of high lift generating in insect flight. Many Weis-Fogh mechanisms were studied by lots of researchers in the world to take high propulsive force. However, most of them use flap mode with large inertia and low moving speed,by which could not get expected propulsive force.Half-Rotating Mechanism(HRM)was a new biomimetic mechanism proposed by our work team and able to give asymmetry motion by rotating mode.Half-Rotating Wing(HRW)based on HRM may be able to generate Weis-Fogh effect and avoid the shortcoming of traditional Weis-Fogh mechanisms. The working mechanism of HRW and its generating process of Weis-Fogh effect were firstly introduced in this paper.Dynamic mesh technology was used in Fluent calculation to effectively solve the problem of moving boundary of HRW wing during operating. The simulation results indicated that the pressure difference between top and bottom of HRW wing would generate propulsive force. The comparison between simulation and physical test showed that numerical analysis of fluid dynamic by Fluent software was effective and the HRW could be indeed provided with Weis-Fogh effect to get larger propulsive force by installing wall.
