On the Structural Synthesis of Mechanisms in Ancient Chinese Books with Illustrations
This work summarized authors’ research for the structural synthesis of mechanisms that were depicted confusedly in ancient Chinese books in the past years.By utilizing the methodology for the conceptual designs of modern mechanisms and reconstruction designs of lost ancient machinery,all feasible designs of ancient mechanisms,in the illustrations of 5 major ancient Chinese books,with uncertain members and joints that meet the technical standards of the subjects’ time periods are synthesized systematically.Three examples,such as ancient Chinese crossbow,silk-reeling mechanism,and slanting loom are provided.
