Study on Rock Fracture Mechanism by Disc Cutters Using the SPH Method
The theory of rock cutting with disc cutter is the critical issue on Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology.Considering the complexity and importance of the basic principles of rock breaking during excavating tunnel.a new method,Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics Method (SPH),was used to study rock fracture mechanism,and the existing results proved that the results of SPH model is correct and the method of SPH is feasible.Depending on these research results.the rock crushing process induced by two cutters in synchronous and sequential orders were performed using SPH method.The results showed that when cutters acting on the rock in a sequential order.the second indentation had an influence on the crack evolution of the first indentation; with the increasing of cutter spacing,the second crack is independent from the first crack gradually.The rock cutting efficiency in sequential order is superior to synchronous order no matter from the view of crack evolution or the cutters force analysis.
