Survival of the Fittest:How Firms Match Their Business Models with Business Environment

Business models are crucial to firms that operate in a changing environment. This paper proposes a new classification of business models that reflects the boundary-spanning nature of business models based on market orientation theory, and investigates how business environment affects the performance of different types of business models. The results show that demand uncertainty weakens(strengthens)the positive influence of driving-market(market-driving); technology turbulence has the opposite moderating effects on the relationship between different types of business models and their performance, compared to those effects of demand uncertainty; when competition intensity is high, the positive influence of driving-market business models on performance is enhanced.
