Using Soundscape Model to Control Ambient Noise Based on Sound Preference Evaluation

Nowadays, urban ambient noise is an urgent problem to impede social well-being in a city.It impacts not only peoples recreation outside but also influences occupants physical comfort inside. There is no doubt that noise is becoming the second environmental problem in a city. Moreover, noise is also caused window-closing behavior for protecting noise annoyance, which leads to more energy consumption. To control an ambient noise is therefore a key topic in todays urban renewal.A traditional method for noise controlling is to make urban noise regulation,in which all sounds are treated as unwanted sounds that have to be reduced.Current research has found that different sounds especially social and natural sounds have different influence in terms of various situations.A typical case is square dance that is considered notorious by some ones but welcome by others. It is found that “soundscape not “noise is more useful in controlling ambient noise while sound preference evaluation cannot be ignored.A modeling technique is then developed in this paper using soundscape concept to control ambient noise focusing on sound preference evaluation.Based on broad social surveys to existing sounds within an urban context, artificial neural network model has been developed to evaluate sound preference perception within a certain environmental situation.Through such model technique, specific sound environment has been defined and marked for a broad wide ambient noise control.Eventually, soundscape model will be applied to control a citys ambient noise by its evaluation function.
