Structural Equation Modeling of Human-related Issues in Cellular Manufacturing

The application of cellular manufacturing is a well-known lean manufacturing strategy to meet the demands of mass variety and small batches in a prompt delivery.Numerous techniques and methods have been developed for solving the cell formation problem over the past 30 years.Cellular manufacturing has the flexibility to produce a high variety of low demand products, but the productivity and quality largely depends on operators skill and other human-related factors. However, there is a singular absence of articles that deal with human-related issues in cellular manufacturing, because workers are regarded as one part of the product flow line and given little attention, in addition it is typically difficult to quantify the human-related issues. In this paper, Canonical Correlation Analysis will be applied to evaluate the relationship between human-related issues and productivity in the cellular manufacturing.Canonical coefficients are constructed based on time measurement data and the answers of two questionnaires obtained during an experimental study in Fukushima University entitled as Industrial System Laboratory. The results have showed that human factors significantly affect the productivity of cellular manufacturing and operators aptitude has a stronger impact on the productivity than other human factors.
