A Case Study of Underwater Noise Measurement in Related to Civil Engineering Works
The environmental pollutants generated in construction sites have an impact on humans and the ecosystem. With increased awareness of the need to conserve the environment and maintain or enhance the quality of life, a number of studies have been performed to examine the effects of noise and vibrations caused by construction work on humans, livestock and the eco system. However, there have been relatively few studies done on the effect of aboveground or un derwater construction work on the underwater ecosystem. In the case of underwater noise, the generation and transmission mechanisms are affected by a number of factors, including the air borne noise and ground vibration, and due to the complexity, the impact on underwater noise cannot be judged or predicted using a uniform method. In particular, diverse types of atmospheric noise and ground vibration occurring in civil engineering processes have been measured and ana lyzed. In contrast, there have been relatively fewer cases of measuring and analyzing underwater noise. Thus, this study was performed to measure the underwater noise generated by the processes that frequently cause noise and vibration and by construction equipment commonly used on con struction sites, and to analyze the frequency based on the measurements data.Based on the re sults, the basic data for analyzing the dominance frequency range and the area of influence for underwater noise will be presented to allow consideration of the threshold of hearing of fish when operating construction equipment in the future.
